Overview:

We strive to have a residency cohort that reflects the wonderful racial and ethnic diversity of the population we are fortunate to serve at Holtz Children’s Hospital. Experience our resident programs at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine (UMMSM) with an enriching four-week clerkship to grow and build your professional network while experiencing working with a diverse patient population. Fourth year medical students who come from a racial group that is Underrepresented in Medicine (URM) will be selected and rotate within inpatient and outpatient pediatric settings, connect with a resident mentor, be paired with a faculty advisor, as well as attend unique experiences within the diversity and inclusion network. The goal of the clerkship scholarship is to encourage underrepresented minority (URM) medical students to complete a pediatric elective at our residency training program. While learning about our Diversity and Inclusion community, the URM applicant will examine the potential fit with our departments for the continuation of their medical training and professional development. Students will rotate through both inpatient and outpatient pediatric setting

Course Design:

Students will have the opportunity for an immersion experience in an outpatient underserved clinic, including the mobile pediatric clinic as well as school health clinics. Students will also get experience working in the inpatient setting in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and general wards.  Unique experiences can also be crafted to meet the visiting student’s interests. The rotation is only offered in 4-week blocks. Additional details:

  • Each student will have an assigned resident mentor and/or faculty advisor to assist with connecting with the greater Miami area.

  • Experience first-hand the collegial atmosphere within or program, while having an enriching educational experience in a diverse city.

  • Rotate with one of a variety of available subspecialty services, which include a combination of consult and outpatient responsibilities.

  • Meet with our Chair of Pediatrics, Program Director and Associate Program Director; our Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and or representative; and faculty engaged in clinical and/or academic work in area(s) of particular interest to the applicant.

We are strongly committed to fostering a learning environment where diversity is nurtured and welcomed. Our Program's diverse group of Faculty, Residents, Fellows, and Staff mirror the community we serve.

We have developed initiatives to ensure that we continue to approach equity, diversity and inclusion systematically and consciously.

We are fortunate to be part of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine where Diversity, Inclusion and Equity Initiatives are at the forefront of our Dean and President's vision.  In addition, our Chairman, Dr. Glen Flores has dedicated his career to focus extensively on disparities in health care caused by poverty, racism, and lack of access for underserved population.
